Self Determination Theory is really about autonomous motivation, how we can be willingly engaged in the things we are engaged in. So if we are looking at children in school we want them to be engaged in their studies not because we are forcing them but because they understand the value of studies and find interest in them. Or if we are working with people in an organisation we want them to engage their job with the most volition possible. So Self Determination Theory is about identifying the conditions under which that is most likely to happen.
Kind of at the core of the theory we say people everywhere have some basic psychological needs. They need a sense of autonomy in what they're doing, but they also need a sense of competence, being able to affect their outcomes and perform well at what they're doing, and they also need to feel connected to the people around them in a workplace or a classroom. And if those conditions are fulfilled, typically people show a lot of volition for what they are doing and high-quality engagement in tasks.
