The Solution-Focused perspective is a post-modern perspective. As such, it views clients to be the experts of their own lives and have suffi cient strengths and resources to resolve their problems. 167-168

..treatment that is effective need only assist clients to clarify goals and enhance solutions that are already available to them. 168

..it presumes that problems only arise when individuals continue to apply solutions that don’t work rather than solutions that do work. (중략) this “strengths-based” perspective does not recognize pathology and refuses to pathologize individuals by assigning formal diagnoses. 168

Assessment focuses on both the current situations and predisposing factors, i.e., exceptions, inherent strengths, and unique resources. It also focuses on understanding client’s lives and situations from their perspective. 168

병리를 가정하지 않고 단순히 문제해결의 관점에서 접근하는 것이 신선하네요.

내담자가 이전에 시행착오 학습을 통해 배웠던 문제해결 전략 중에 효과가 있는 것을 정교화시켜 재적용하고, 내담자의 강점에 기반하여 문제해결 전략을 새롭게 개발하는 부분에서 배울 점이 있어 보입니다.

기적 질문(miracle question)을 통해 긍정적인 미래 자기를 생각해 보게 하고 현재 자기와의 간극을 줄여나갈 수 있게 돕는 부분도 적용 가능성이 높아 보이고요.

다른 어떤 이론에서보다 구체적인 목표 설정이 이루어지기 때문에 목표 설정의 어려움을 경험하는 초심 상담자들은 문제해결중심 사례개념화의 방식을 어느 정도 숙지할 필요가 있겠어요.

이런 장점에도 불구하고 문제해결중심의 사례개념화가 맞는 내담자가 있고 그렇지 않은 내담자가 있을 텐데, 책에 제시된 Richard 사례처럼 성격 문제가 뚜렷하다거나 정신병리가 심한 수준일 때는 문제해결중심 사례개념화가 지닌 피상적인 면이 불거지면서 내담자 상담 및 치료에 별 도움이 되지 못하는 것 아닌가 의문을 품게 됩니다.

다른 이론적 접근과 다르게 Predisposition에서 내담자의 강점만을 강조함으로써 이런 피상성이 더 두드러지는 듯하고요. Richard의 역기능적 패턴이 다른 사람을 깎아 내리거나 이용하면서 자기를 고양하는 전략을 쓴다는 것인데, 상담의 목표는 단순히 go dancing and playing golf with friend 하면서(이전에 기분을 좋게 만든 전략) sadness, anxiety를 감소시키려 하는 것이 많이 의아했습니다.

그리고 이 책을 다 읽어가는 시점에서 드는 생각은, 1장부터 4장까지 사례개념화의 전반적인 방식을 쉽고 친절하게 알려줘서 도움이 되지만, 다섯 케이스를 통해 각 이론에 이를 적용하는 방식이 너무 단조롭고 지루하다는 것입니다. 똑같은 사례를 각 이론의 핵심 요소에 맞게 약간만 변주해서 반복해서 기술하기 때문에 몰입이 잘 되지 않습니다. 카피 앤 페이스트 같은 부분이 많아요.
